(11,540 posts)I notice he's not really wearing his fancy pope robe, looks more like business casual or something.
Kinda like it, makes him a bit more human less of a figurehead.

(8,483 posts)The clerical collar is clear, and the black looks to me like a robe - a plain one that you might see on any priest anywhere.

(6,988 posts)Russia is Orthodox and couldn't give a shit about the what Papacy in Rome says.
The Greek Orthodox Patriarch is considered the first amongst equals, but everyone knows the Russian Patriarch of Moscow is the real power behind the Orthodox throne. He and the Pope are for all intents and purposes are considered equal rivals.
The only two differences between the Catholic and Orthodox churches are, one, who heads the church and two the type of hats they wear. Oh, there is a third one I forgot, how they cross themselves.

(4,195 posts)I'm loving this voice of sanity in how it (may) influence the rest of the world, including America, and their leaders.
I am non-religious myself, but I already really like this guy for speaking what is an obvious truth. I hope his message goes far and wide and sinks in and helps to make a difference.
Russians can go fuck themselves.

(6,988 posts)Well, since I'm Russian let me put it this way...

I like this liberal Pope as well (and believe me, I'm no fan of the Russian Orthodox Church). Just pointing out that among those in Orthodoxy, the Pope has very little if any influence (and that just doesn't include Russia, but its worldwide, they've despised each other since the year 1054). And you should care about who is the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Pope has the ear of many leaders around the world, but so does the Patriarch.
When the Pope and he meet, its usually on the down low and the official reason is usually a nothing burger. But everyone knows when it happens, some serious shit went down and they had to meet to fix the problem.

(4,195 posts)I painted with a much too wide brush. As with any group of people, there are good and bad among them. I should have made a more succinct statement, such as: Russians (who support Putin) can go fuck themselves. While I understand that many Russians, living in Russia, have been brainwashed and propagandized to the point where they don't seem to be able to understand the truth of the matter (either that, or they have zero empathy).
I can use that same paintbrush against Americans (who support Trump). At least here, we have a label to make it easier: MAGAs.
Again, I am sorry. I KNOW there are good, decent Russians (some living in Russia). And the poverty and crime/corruption that they have to deal with is horrific. One of them is this guy who's videos I regularly watch: Vasya in the Hay. This guy uses his youtube channel to go out to these abandoned villages and assist the elderly and babushkas who are living in the worst kind of poverty you can imagine. That guy, that Russian, is a hero in my eyes. Here is a link to his channel if anyone is interested:
https://www.youtube.com/@vasyainthehay
So, for the third time (I hope this shows how embarrassed I am for my thoughtless statement), I am sorry, and I can understand how it could offend.
The other main thing that I have learned from many of the Ukraine Reports etc. that I follow, is that the Russian Orthodoxed Church is really just another arm of the FSB. I don't think it is an honest religion (I'm not sure if any are, but I don't see others blessing bombs that are going to be used to kill civilians)

(6,988 posts)But sad to say, kind of used to it, all the way back to the Cold War era. Many Western and Central Europeans consider us just a whiter version of Mongols. Granted I'm a part of exiles from a century ago from the Tsar, but we managed to keep our heritage, language, customs, etc. (of course recent Russians who have left look at me funny sometimes when we speak the language, sounds like I'm speaking the kings English because the dialect is so old).
Worked to my advantage when I was touring France and Italy, scammers backed away from me when I started speaking Russian, one even said, "oh shit, you're Russian". Didn't work so well in Egypt, apparently, a lot of Russians visit there and the government in Moscow helps quite a bit. Too bad my wife who is half Iranian didn't know any words from her heritage (yes I know, two groups of people trying to kill each other for centuries...get married).
As for the Russian Orthodox Church, yes, they have influence in the government again, but nowhere near at the level of the time of the Tsar. So don't take too much stock in that. And the war is definately being fueled by propoganda, but most don't realize what is fueling the propoganda, its paranoia. Not saying its right or justified. But I do understand it and how it can be manipulated. One thing I've learned in life, we often only have half the story, which is often quite true in every nation. I've traveled enough and met enough people to see and understand different perspectives.
Oh and I apologize for telling you "to go fuck yourself" in Russian. There is actually a few different ways to say that in the language, go figure.

(4,195 posts)But I kind of guessed it wasn't something nice.
Can you tell me what 'Vasya in the Hay' means? I've been curious about that ever since I started watching his videos a couple years ago.
I'm glad you accepted my apology, I honestly felt terrible when I read your response. I will definitely be more thoughtful in my posts. In my mind, what I was thinking when I said it, was the "Russian Warship, go fuck yourself' kind of thing. I was strictly 'thinking' about the war with Ukraine, specifically the pro-invasion of Ukraine Russians (Z Patriots? is that a good label for them?). But just because I was 'thinking' it doesn't mean it comes across in my typed words.
I also want to mention that I am envious (in a good way) of the description of your travels in your life. I've only been to Tijuana and Toronto as far as traveling to another country. I've been all over the US, and grew up in Hawaii, which is a cultural melting pot.
I think a big part of our problems (in the US) is that a lot of people never leave their 'neck of the woods', and end up with very closed minds.

(103,594 posts)He's in standard clerical dress, and Popes just don't do that - he's already showed he's fine with the impressive robes. It also just comes from a TikTok account "@scrollfuels", and there's no way an anonymous TikTok account could score an interview with the new Pope that quickly.
