President Donald Trump wants to create a 'Golden Dome' for the U.S. What would that actually look like?

Seven days after his inauguration, Donald Trump issued the “Iron Dome for America” executive order to create a cutting-edge defense system that protects the U.S. from long-range missile attacks.

The idea evokes the concept of Israel’s missile defense system, but there would be several key differences between the U.S. ally’s Iron Dome and Trump’s so-called “Golden Dome”.

The Golden Dome would have to cover a much larger area, for starters. The Golden Dome will also have to be a lot more comprehensive, with several different systems that can locate, track and stop any kind of aerial attack the U.S. might face, according to Wes Rumbaugh, a fellow in the Missile Defense Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. By comparison, Israel’s Iron Dome is a system designed to specifically protect against just short-range rockets and artillery shells.

The Pentagon has yet to release any detailed plans about the project. But Congressional Republicans recently proposed allocating $25 billion from this year’s budget for the project, signaling that officials may start bringing the Golden Dome to fruition soon.

Closer to a trillion dollars, actually, with absolutely no guarantee that it would work.

We have oceans on both sides of the country. The only things that could destroy us from the outside would be ICBMs and terrorism. I'd also include cyber warfare too.

can just glass that entire country if it attacks us?

We have the largest deliverable nuclear arsenal on earth. It is very expensive, but it keeps assholes like Kim Jong Un from starting some shit.

To my knowledge, nothing ever was built and most scientists were of the opinion it was not possible. Decades later, technology has improved, but has any credible scientist proposed such an idea or is this just an attempt to make real a Trump rant.

The comparison to the Iron dome is telling. The problem the iron dome was built to counter was well defined and as noted much less ambitious than protecting the entire US from essentially anything. It ignores that the US has always had a higher level of protection than Israel even with the iron dome. We have long had peaceful neighbors in both Canada and Mexico and we have oceans on the east and west.

The question is has DOGE avoided cutting funding for research in the types of processing needed. I wonder if research into identifying threats from everywhere could be better used to create tools that air traffic controllers could use. Any star wars system would need to identify things moving towards us including their trajectory and speed. If we can't create a failsafe warning system for items that are known, how can we think we can identify, much less automatically counter, threats?
