Trump welcomes white South Africans, though other refugees are halted

After suspending the program for admitting refugees into the United States, President Donald Trump is making an exception for one group: white South Africans, who he claims have been victims of racial discrimination.

About 60 South Africans who belong to the white minority Afrikaner ethnic group ‒ classified by the Trump administration as refugees ‒ are expected to arrive in the United States on May 12.

For decades, South Africa was controlled under apartheid rule by the country's white minority, many of them descendants of Dutch colonists. Apartheid, a system of legalized segregation, deprived the majority of citizens of basic rights and forced many Black South Africans to live in ethnic Bantustans. It ended in 1994.

Now many white South Africans, who make up a minority of the population, say they're unfairly targeted by a new law that allows the South African government to seize property for the "public interest," in some cases without compensation.

4. I know these people. I lived with them under apartheid.

And they are scum, just like the MAGA cult leader who's bringing them here. I lived in Jo'burg when parks and beaches and schools and restaurants and post office lines and phone booths and water fountains and bus stations and train stations carried signs saying "Whites" or "Nonwhites." It was 1976, and the Soweto riots broke out that summer. Living in South Africa then was like stepping back into the US South in the 1950s.

White South Africans, especially the Afrikaners who are descendants of the Dutch settlers, match up well with the White US Southerners who operated their less formal apartheid system, until the Civil Rights Act and other legislation was passed in the 1960s, a century after "emancipation."

The Afrikaners are red necks just like Billy Bob from Mobile. Make no mistake about that. They are racists of the highest order, and they had no problem subjugating the vast nonwhite majority. To call them "refugees" would be like calling George Wallace a "refugee" back in the 60s when he stood in the schoolhouse door at the University of Alabama and vowed "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, and segregation forever."

If anyone had any doubts about whether Trump's MAGA regime was racist, no one can have any doubts now. And my tax dollars are being used to help them carry out their racist agenda.

Taking to the streets is our duty as we vow "freedom and equality now, freedom and equality tomorrow, and freedom and equality forever."

5. I guess our guy did it all wrong

We have a white Afrikaans-speaking South African working at our office in Dallas. He has a greed card, but is scared to leave the country for fear of not being allowed to return. We have some work coming up in Hong Kong that would require his particular expertise, but he doesn't know if he dares go in person. If they give him a hard time, I guess all he has to do is request refugee status. His wife isn't white, so he should probably keep quiet about that, too. Maybe I can get him to learn modern Dutch as a condition of letting him back in. He always speaks to me in Afrikaans, and I understand about 75%-80% of what he says, but my ears hurt if I have to keep it up for over half an hour!
