And the Librarian of Congress was most likely fired a couple of days ago because that official appoints the head of the Copyright Office.
Decoder article with a good explanation of the latest report from the Copyright Office:

The AI bros - Musk, Altman et alii - have been putting tremendous pressure on governments around the world to change their copyright and intellectual property laws to carve out an exemption for AI training data.
They've already stolen hundreds of billions, possibly trillions of dollars' worth of the world's intellectual property. That theft is the ONLY reason generative AI - the AI that generates text, images, video and music - works as well as it does. Open AI, with its ChatGPT and Dall-E, has admitted they can't get by with just what's in the public domain.
And although AI companies have made token efforts at licensing - most likely to improve their image during these court battles - they do not want to be forced to compensate all the people whose copyrighted work they stole.
They don't even want to go along with proposed legislation under consideration by the UK government that would allow them to use that copyrighted work for training AI, as long as the artists and other creators were allowed to opt out. The AI companies made it clear they have no intention of revealing what they stole for their training data; they would find it too burdensome to allow artists to opt out; and in no way are they willing to compensate owners of that copyrighted work if it isn't removed from the AI.
And now Elon Musk has said we should get rid of intellectual property laws, period.
Of course he and other billionaire AI bros have the money and power to go after anyone who steals their creations.
They just want to make it impossible for the people whose work they stole to go after them.
And Trump is now removing government officials they view as obstacles.

(1,695 posts)because Zuckerberg stole millions of books from authors to train his AI. No doubt he has his fingers in this too.

(55,882 posts)Trump is for sale, and there are powerful, wealthy companies and individuals in the creative industries who oppose the tech lords' theft of IP. But at the moment the tech lords have more power and money. And Trump also has a lot of grudges against actors, writers and musicians who've criticized him. Would he mind if AI books ripping off Stephen King competed with King's novels? Hell, no - he'd love it.
I've seen countless tweets from MAGAts cheering the idea of AI destroying the livelihoods of liberal creatives.

It belongs to them.

The fact that the average voter thought they would be better off with billionaires in charge is a serious problem.

(98 posts)This ultimately is about theft. Of course Trump would side with the AI thieves who gobble up everyone else's creativity to make a buck.
Ultimately the courts will decide if AI "appropriation" of IP can qualify as "fair use" in copyright law. We can't count on the SC here. I can see them writing a tortured opinion that magically finds fair use and sides with the AI honchos.

(55,882 posts)been putting tremendous pressure on the UK government, and after what Musk said recently.about getting rid of IP laws, and these actions by and then against the US Copyright Office, we can expect the same sort of pressure here. They're even arguing that national security requires countries to allow the theft since supposedly AI development will be hampered otherwise.
