WTF?
WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump reportedly is ready to accept a luxury Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet as a gift from the ruling family of Qatar during his trip to the Middle East this coming week, and U.S. officials say it could be converted into a potential presidential aircraft.
The Qatari government acknowledged discussions between the two countries about the possible transfer of a plane to be used temporarily as Trumps Air Force One, but denied that the jet is being gifted or that a final had been decision made.
ABC News reported that Trump will use the aircraft at his presidential plane until shortly before he leaves office in January 2029, when ownership will be transferred to the foundation overseeing his yet-to-be-built presidential library.
The gift was expected to be announced when Trump visits Qatar, according to ABCs report, as part of a trip that also includes stops in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the first extended foreign travel of his second term.

(109,589 posts)and maybe a hidden "kill" switch too. (I will only comment that I'd not want innocents on that plane, including the pilots and staff).

(1,997 posts)Trump strong armed Qatar into promising to loan him a plane. But to Trump, possession is nine-tenths of the law, so its his for life. And, of course, as the consummate grifter, the American people will never see that plane again once he leaves office. Meanwhile, Qatar has learned a valuable lesson.

(208 posts)this is going to happen. Trump would be out of office by the time the plane was outfitted for Presidential use.

(24,118 posts)At least two, maybe three, so regular maintenance can be done and there's still an "Air Force One" ready to fly.
And you're right. Upgrading for presidential use, including in-flight refueling and other changes that are no doubt classified, should take a few years.

(24,769 posts)is because of its superior range, much longer than the -200 models currently in use.
So they were not going to retrofit them for in-flight refueling.
But I'm betting this whole thing is a non-starter. The Air Force nor the Secret Service is going to let him fly on a plane that is not equipped with the communications and defensive capabilities the current aircraft possess.
