The legal status for around half a million Haitians living in the U.S. will end Feb. 3, at the order of the Trump administration. That includes more than 10,000 Haitians living in western Ohio, many of whom are working in and near Springfield. If that happens, Ohios Republican governor is warning about a possible economic crisis in that area.
In March, the Trump administration said it would revoke the temporary protected status for hundreds of thousands who came to the U.S. to escape violence in Haiti. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Haiti no longer meets the statutory requirements for TPS, so the status ends on Feb. 3. A federal judge blocked Trump's order to revoke TPS status for Haitians in September at the request of the American Civil Liberties Union and other groups.

"The facts are things individuals are contributing to economy of the local community," DeWine told reporters last week. "When you talk to business men and women who are employing them, what they tell me has not changed. It continues to be, 'we need them to work. They are reliable. Yes, there are language challenges. Yes, there are cultural challenges. But they show up. They work, they want overtime, they're reliable and they pass drug tests.'"
DeWine said he's concerned about what will happen to the overall Springfield area as well. You're going to have a lot of unfilled jobs. You're going to have whatever the consequences is of 10,000 or who knows how manyno one knows reallypeople who are no longer being able to be employed," DeWine said. "They want to work. Many of them are raising families. Some of them have children who are citizens. So, yeah, this is not a good situation."

(13,589 posts)The immigrants don't deserve what Trump has in store for them but if Trump ends their stay I hope the entire economy of Ohio crashes.

(2,762 posts)No Spine Dewine could have/should have stepped up more in defense of the Haitian folks in Springfield when ol shady Vance was spinning his lies about them instead of the tepid, halfhearted defense he came up with. Hes just a trump sucker at heart, as is Jon Husted. The only good thing he did was during Covid and I have to say I was totally shocked he had the balls to do that. In the end though he threw Dr Amy Acton under the bus. While there are a lot of ignorant rednecks in Ohio, we didn't all vote for what Ohio has become. We are a ridiculously gerrymandered state with a bunch of republicans at the statehouse that dont give a crap about the will of the voters or what the state Supreme Court says. Weve twice voted for a non partisan commission to draw up fair districts, and twice the republicans have ignored the vote and ignored the courts and continued on their merry way. I dont know how we go about fixing it.

(20,422 posts)He made it clear he's no fan of Trump and his extreme agenda. He's used his veto stamp a number of times when Ohio legislators attempt to appease the king and has been overridden by the MAGAs a few times. He was among the first red state governors to apply Biden's Medicare Extension during the pandemic when others were leaving their citizens hanging without health care..
If it sounds like I'm going to bat for him, in a way I am, but only to say he's not as bad as we.ve seen in the past and he's probably better than what we'll see in the future. Having said that, he's a devout old school republican and shares the party's values and goals. I differ with him there.
If it wasn't for his appointment to VP, Vance would be running for governor next year.
