There was a 5.8 earthquake in Eastern Cuba today

I didn’t feel it here and have not seen or heard any reports.
Cuba doesn’t need this.
https://www.local10.com/news/world/2026/03/17/magnitude-58-earthquake-strikes-near-cuba-no-tsunami-threat-reported/

The earthquake occurred near the Septentrional–Oriente fault zone, a major earthquake-producing fault system in the northern Caribbean. The fault marks part of the boundary between the North American and Caribbean plates and runs from southeastern Cuba eastward along the northern side of Hispaniola, including Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Scientists describe the Septentrional fault as one of the region’s principal strike-slip faults, where blocks of the Earth’s crust slide past each other horizontally. USGS research has identified it as a likely source of large earthquakes in Hispaniola, and paleoseismic studies suggest some segments have gone hundreds of years without a ground-rupturing event.

The broader Septentrional–Oriente system has produced major earthquakes before, including a magnitude 7.7 event in 2020 between Cuba and Jamaica.

Cuba doesn't need that at all with no gas no power. We will be paying for our government's cruelty for a long time to come.

I saw that this morning, after the power came back on at my place. We had a big wind storm last night and into the late morning, knocked out the power twice. This place is all electric so I had to wait for hours to make my coffee this morning!

I noticed it had been out when I did my 3am thing, all the clocks were flashing. And about ten minutes after I got back in bed it went out again. Wasn't on when I got back up around seven and that's late for me. Fortunately it was amazingly warm, +50F ! I heard a tree limb hit the roof next door, some of the gusts were well beyond 75mph.

I wonder what summer will be like.

Safer than I've been for while, not worried about anything, really.

Yikes, I just took a look at that! Lots of wind and rain for a while. Try to stay dry!

You're on the south end of that thing that blew through here! It's offshore now but the 'driver' air mass is now bringing the cold weather, winter's not over yet.

The hardest part was waiting to boil water for coffee and I didn't want to open the fridge.

Yeah, first world problem. I was a little late getting on with my unscheduled day... went and got some groceries. I did notice that gas was under $3.60/gal. I was happy about that.

Diesel is $4.99/gal here. Prices are going to skyrocket.

I bet it goes up here too. Glad I don't have to fuel up a semi these days! After all the costs due to oil prices, I'd be working for free or paying to have a job.

I'd get an electric vehicle if I could afford one.
