There is a post this morning about State Senator John Cavanaugh of Nebraska being a Trumper. It is not true! Because the Senator voted for eliminating income taxes on overtime and tips, a conservative PAC said he was voting with Trump. From there millions of dollars were spent against the Senator by conservative PACs. Lie after lie was spread 24/7 on TV and radio ads. Apparently the ads paid off. The Senator is down by about 1,000 votes. Election workers in Douglas County still have thousands of ballots left to count, and the Powell and Cavanaugh camps are both treating the race as undetermined.
I will support the winner of the race. I just want to clear the air about Senator Cavanaugh.

(1,276 posts)John is my state senator. I have met him and some in his family. I voted for him in the primary. Yes, it would suck to lose him as my senator, but I voted for him anyway because I want the best person to win in November!
Side note: like Steve, I will vote for Powell if (probably when) she becomes the nominee, but only because I never vote republican. Now I am focusing my energy on getting Dan Osborn and Lynne Walz elected in Nebraska!

(1,032 posts)100% NOTHING TO DO WITH HELPING ANY EMPLOYEES AND 100% EVERYTHING TO DO WITH CHIPPING AWAY AT THE SOCIAL SECURITY FUND.
NO ELECTED DEMOCRAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FOOLED BY THE UNEXPRESSED REPUBLICAN LONG-STANDING GOAL.
IOW: DON'T BE A CHUMP AND VOTE FOR A REPUBLICAN IDEA.

(1,032 posts)Maybe I'm just a tad more cynical than some Social Security mavens.
I'm sure the endorsing organizations and politicians are looking at the entire larger picture and record, as they should. Or at least at Party affiliation.
As for any Democrat's voting for anything proposed by any Republican, I will die on the "Never" hill.

(207 posts)we just announced that CPP Canadian Pension Plan is at $700 Billion CDN or 10x the annual payout in fact we are reducing the payroll deduction. It will be 21x by 2100. Which means by then, there will not need to have any payroll deductions for future gens CPP. The US is going to run out of it's bank in just 7 years, meaning Social Security payroll deductions will payout only what was paid into it, in just 7 years. The big reason for this is the gov't borrowing against SS in past republican administrations. So another reason Canadians shouldn't want anything to do with the US way of government.

(38,795 posts)I would be less inclined to vote for a candidate who supported the gimmick of eliminating taxes on tips and overtime. Doing so encourages fighting amongst ourselves for scraps and removes the important voices of tipped workers and overtime workers for tax reform for all lower and middle income workers - since they already got theirs (and didn't want to rock the boat and have it taken away).

(1,276 posts)I had to for many years in Omaha. You realize the base wage is $2.13 an hour. Supposedly we would make enough in tips to reach the $7.25 an hour minimum wage.
Could you live on that? If so, please proceed. It's fine to be political and high minded when it comes to reforms. Don't care so much about that when you have to pay your rent.

(38,795 posts)So legally, you are in the same position as every other minimum wage employee - except that you now get tax-free income - a benefit not granted to others similarly situated who still have to pay rent (and taxes) on the same hourly rate you are earning. That is what I object to - I am not opposed to waiving taxes on ALL minimum wage workers, but I am opposed to giving special treatment to one group of minimum wage workers while leaving others to pay more than their fair share.
The only way to change the system is to unite and demand changes for all similarly situated workers. When we cheer grantingone group special treatment, we diminish our ability to make change for all.
This is a standard tactic to avoid changing the system. Pick a "sexy" portion of a group with a loud voice/advocacy team and address their problem without addressing others similarly situated.
Breast cancer - double implants, whatever size you want, even when you have a 1 cm tumor, are deemed medically necessary and insurance is required by law to cover it. Even though that area of your body is largely clothed and most women were never equal sized to start with.
But disfiguring scars from other cancer surgery, even ones splashed across your face which can't be hidden, are treated as cosmetic.
The chances of having all restoration after cancer surgery treated as medically necessary (by law) is virtually zero - because Congress silenced the loudest voice (the breast cancer lobby) by giving them special treatment.
(And, for the record, I have both breast cancer AND a visible disfiguring scar from a different cancer. So I'm on both sides of that special treatment.)
Ditto special capped priced for the insulin my spouse takes - but not for the costly meds my daughter takes (over $100,000 just for meds). Again, giving one group special treatment silences their voice from the flight to get all medication prices called.
I am opposed to giving one group of similarly situated individuals special treatment, especially when the purpose is to silence that voice and minimize the chance for real change.

(173 posts)That is what this race has been. The endorsements should show that Cavanaugh is not what those ads accuse him of. When the final totals are in I will support the Democratic winner but things should never have come to this point.

(837 posts)This is the reason the democrats need to fight the propaganda battle. With the acquisition of cbs and cnn by right wingers they are aggressively fighting this battle and in many cases winning.
