Unemployment Surges as Trump's Florida Paradise Crumbles

Story by Alex Henderson - Originally published in Alternet

As a native Floridian, I confess to schadenfreude. And, as philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer said, "to savor schadenfreude is diabolic."

MAGA Republicans often hail Florida as a symbol of their movement's success, praising Ron DeSantis' two terms as governor and arguing that President Donald Trump chose wisely when he made Mar-a-Lago his primary residence. The Sunshine State is associated with a who's-who of MAGA, including Trump, DeSantis, former U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, ex-U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, and conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer, among many others.

But Florida, according to Bloomberg, is now facing higher-than-average unemployment.

"While the U.S. unemployment rate has been little changed over the past year, joblessness in Florida has surged," according to Bloomberg News reporter Augusta Saraiva. "It's climbed more than a percentage point to 4.8 percent — faster than nearly any other state — and is now among the highest nationwide.

--snip--

"The tide has turned amid worsening affordability problems, a surge in immigration enforcement and a slowdown in tourism," the Bloomberg News journalist reports. "Net domestic migration to Florida totaled just 22,517 people in the year through July 1, 2025, according to Census Bureau figures — less than a tenth of the peak recorded in 2022.

When we left our home insurance was $7000 per year and now it'd be $12,000.

Alligator Alcatraz, our state universities, public schools, high insurance rates with little returns to those devastated by weather events, gerrymandering every district red and on n on. Billionaires love it and they’re coming in droves but the jobs are mostly hospitality jobs that don’t pay a living wage. It’s not a rosy situation, for sure

for putting right-wing/MAGA ideas into practice. Now those voters as well as Florida’s non-voters and purists-on-snits election-boycotters are finding out that MAGA and Trumpie policies don’t work so well in practice.

Empty stomachs, homelessness, and chronic illness may not speak as eloquently as some of the Good Guys’ better speech-writers and posters, but they speak louder and more forcefully to those who’d chosen to let liars and charlatans do their thinking for them.

I want to say ”Live and learn, suckers!” But I live in Texas and our ruling party is about as bad and a plurality of our voters are just about that stupid. Also, I suspect that what MAGA Republicanism is doing and will continue to do Republican-voting Floridians will carry a lot of them off to early graves.
