CNN Three Democratic lawmakers who were involved in a tense encounter outside an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement facility in Newark, New Jersey, are accusing the administration of intimidation after a Department of Homeland Security official suggested they could be arrested.
Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, who joined CNNs State of the Union Sunday alongside fellow New Jersey Democrats, Reps. LaMonica McIver and Robert Menendez Jr., said the lawmakers havent heard from DHS after the tense encounter on Friday that culminated in the detention of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. We have no idea what they have in mind, other than to create an environment of intimidation just by claiming that perhaps we might be subject to arrest, Watson Coleman said. Nothing happened other than the chaos that they created themselves.
The lawmakers traveled for a tour of the facility as part of their Congressional oversight duties and had been there for nearly two hours before the confrontation as ICE officials gave them the run around, Watson Coleman said. But the situation escalated when Baraka was asked to leave the premises and was detained. He was released after several hours. The immigration officials eventually took the lawmakers on the tour after the confrontation, McIver said.
They took us on a tour, offered us a soda in the midst of doing this, never apologized or said anything about the confrontation and the chaos that they caused outside, McIver said, adding that the lawmakers were able to speak to detainees while inside. Lawmakers are allowed to enter any facility operated by or for the Department of Homeland Security used to detain or otherwise house aliens to conduct oversight under the annual appropriations act, which allocates funds for federal agencies.

There is no "unitary executive" shit in this country. Congress has the "power of the purse" despite the abdication of duty by the GOP members of Congress.

(1,027 posts)ICE agents are undoubtedly violating many state laws and local ordinances. For example, showing up in tactical gear with no identification is surely illegally impersonating a police officer.. Many of their tactics a clearly battery or assault. There are many other laws, such as obstructing traffic or being a public nuisance.
Lock them up overnight, even if they are not to be prosecuted. Impound their vehicles. Impound their weapons as evidence pending a court hearing.
Make some good trouble. Let the media see that these are Trump's SS.

(316 posts)The NJ Mayor was trying to conduct oversight on the GEO GROUP. I live in Fla, so it reminded me of the CORRUPTION of the GEO GROUP.. You can google corruption and the geo group. You will come to an article titled Marco Rubio, Geo group, and a legacy of corruption. It is dated 2012. by Beau Hodai. Found on PR watch. There is an all stars cast of Republican corruption. You will know all the names and some if not all are connected to the Trump administration. I jump to an article from the project on government oversight and read the first line. Just days before the 2024 election, a top ice official, left to take a senior job at GEO GROUP.

(152,153 posts)and not just them but others from the area. A bunch of articles are out there. Posting all of those could end up being dupes in LBN.
Per this OP, Rep. Coleman was on CNNs State of the Union today (and she was there with the other members of Congress who were there) -
On MSNBC yesterday -
Roland Martin had some clips of one of the reps (Menendez) on his show (where I think the clips showed his appearance on Faux) -

(152,153 posts)is how much time the "media" (purportedly who report "news" ) spent on Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce - all the way through to the Super Bowl, when their worlds came crashing down and they had to FINALLY stop writing dozens and dozens of redundant articles cluttering up their main pages. I have had to wade through all of that to actually find "news" to post here as they would even find "political" angles and threw those articles in the "political" sections.
It has somewhat bubbled up again with this damn Blake Lively thing but...
