House Republicans unveil Medicaid cuts

WASHINGTON -- House Republicans unveiled the cost-saving centerpiece of President Donald Trump's big, beautiful bill late Sunday, at least $880 billion in cuts largely to Medicaid to help cover the cost of $4.5 trillion in tax breaks.
Tallying hundreds of pages, the legislation is touching off the biggest political fight over health care since Republicans tried to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, during Trump's first term in 2017 which ended in failure.
While Republicans insist they are simply rooting out waste, fraud and abuse to generate savings with new work and eligibility requirements, Democrats warn that millions of Americans will lose coverage. A preliminary estimate from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said the proposals would reduce the number of people with health care by 8.6 million over the decade.
Savings like these allow us to use this bill to renew the Trump tax cuts and keep Republicans promise to hardworking middle-class families, said Rep. Brett Guthrie of Kentucky, the GOP chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, which handles health care spending. But Democrats said the cuts are shameful and essentially amount to another attempt to repeal Obamacare.

We know a couple with a special needs kid who gets Medicaid assistant. One is a lawyer and one is a sound technician. The work theyve done for this kid is astounding
but they needed help.

(28,025 posts)They would make great guests at Democratic town halls that focus on killing tax cuts for billionaires.
Where is the concerted action to stop the Big Beautiful Bill? Make Congressional Magats own it. Hold town halls in red districts that have high percentages of people on Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security.

🚨Nearly 40% of Speaker Mike Johnsons district relies on Medicaid. Now hes leading the charge to gut itputting rural hospitals at risk & ripping care away from working families who earn too little to afford it any other way. Is this what backing working people looks like, sir?
NBC
In Johnsons rural Louisiana district, nearly 25% of adults under age 65 rely on Medicaid, according to an NBC News analysis, while nearly 20% of households receive food stamps. Politically, its a deep-red district that Johnson won with 85% of the vote in November. Louisiana was one of the states that expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, and the program now covers 72 million people across the country.

(8,775 posts)Other facts that Trump and his Republicans lackeys care nothing about:
Approximately 1.75 million veterans, or about 1 in 10, rely on Medicaid for their health care. A significant portion, around 40%, rely solely on Medicaid for all their health care needs. For the remaining 60%, Medicaid supplements other coverage like VA, private insurance, or Medicare.

(190,533 posts)You are absolutely right. See most post above. 40% of Speaker Johnsons district is on Medicaid including 1/4 of the people under 65.
Rural hospitals have been closing for a while but this would be the dagger as you said. Move over food deserts- here comes medical deserts.
Grandma is going to need a bath too. Basically households are going to become 24/7 caregivers even if its spread out over shifts.

(28,025 posts)Waiting for Democrats to make the debate why billionaires don't need a 7 trillion dollar tax cut paid for by the poor and working class. Bernie and AOC are trying.
A single mom friend of mine who works every damn day but doesn't make enough money to afford Obamacare would make a nice guest at a Democratic town hall focused on the damage the 7 trillion dollar tax cut will do to people.
Stop wasting time on an insane impeachment strategy and devote efforts to doing town halls like the MSNBC town hall about fired federal workers. Make the town halls about specific topics and the MSM will cover it.
Time Matters.
DNC I offer my ideas, PM me. The strategy to let Krasnov burn it all down and then we will win the elections is a piss poor strategy. Letting him burn our democracy down is a doom and gloom strategy.

To their mind, government should not be involved with those things. They want "small government", a phrase they've sold to he "small-c" conservatives while eliding what it actually entails.
