DHS terminates temporary protected status program for Afghans

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced on Monday that the U.S. will terminate the temporary protected status program for Afghanistan, a move that could lead to the deportation of over 9,000 Afghans residing in the country. Noem said in a statement that the conditions in Afghanistan have improved sufficiently to warrant the programs termination.
Afghans temporary protected status will expire on May 20 and the elimination of the program will take effect on July 12. This administration is returning TPS to its original temporary intent, Noem said. Weve reviewed the conditions in Afghanistan with our interagency partners, and they do not meet the requirements for a TPS designation.
Noem also claimed that the termination aligns with the Trump administrations efforts to root out fraud in the immigration system. The termination furthers the national interest as DHS records indicate that there are recipients who have been under investigation for fraud and threatening our public safety and national security, Noem said.
The TPS program provides temporary legal status and work authorization to nationals from countries experiencing armed conflict, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions. Former President Joe Biden designated Afghanistan for TPS following the Talibans takeover and the U.S. withdrawal from the country in 2021, which led to the evacuation of tens of thousands of Afghans to the U.S., many under temporary parole status.

(37 posts)sending women (and men as well, though their rights aren't nearly as curtailed) back into a hellhole we created.
Then again, Texas and many other states are becoming indistinguishable from Afghanistan on many levels vis a vis their treatment of women and is only getting worse, so I guess I shouldn't throw stones, really (except I live in California and have never voted for a single Republican in the nearly 40 years I've voted in every single election since I became eligible).

(1,222 posts)Maybe they can go to that country for asylum or immigration? They have nothing to lose by trying.
This just will prove to people that if the USA military comes asking for your assistance run away as fast as you can.

(87 posts)They really don't give a shit, do they?
For most of these people being sent back is an automatic death sentence.
"Noem said in a statement that the conditions in Afghanistan have improved sufficiently to warrant the programs termination." What an absolute crock of shit. I'd be willing to bet my own money that our sparkly white refugees from South Africa are a hell of a lot safer where they are that these Afghans will be when they are sent back.
Oh, our church sponsors two Afghan families and my wife works with their children to help improve their reading in English. Both of the husbands worked as guides and interpreters for our military. What a great thank you they are getting.
This really, really hacks me off.

(4,503 posts)This may be it. Our country can't be counted on to protect those civilians who volunteer, at great risk, to help our service personnel.
