Trump Admits American Companies Will Have to 'Eat' Tariffs When Grilled on 'Policies That Will Hurt America'

President Donald Trump on Friday suggested that American companies will have to endure some form of suffering as a result of his tariffs.

On Friday morning, Trump threatened to hit Apple with a 25% tariff on all iPhones made outside the U.S. It was the president’s latest effort to move its manufacturing back to the country. While taking questions in the Oval Office hours later, Trump added that he’d also do the same for companies like Samsung. He also said that companies like Walmart would have to “eat” the cost of the tariffs.

When asked if his comment about U.S. companies “eating” tariffs was an acknowledgement that domestic companies will pay as opposed to foreign companies, Trump said:

Sometimes the country will eat it; sometimes Walmart will eat it; and sometimes there’ll be something to pay something extra. I’ve always been a fan and I’ve always believed, and if you look — take a look at what I did four years ago. We had the greatest economy and we had no inflation. Remember that. We had no inflation, and yet we had hundreds of billions of dollars of tariffs that I put on China; yet we had no inflation. We had no big cost differential. Oftentimes — and I don’t like it when a department — because they’ll do a lot of business, but, you know, they announce record profits and everything else. They have to take out some of their profits. They’ll make a little bit less money, but I don’t want the consumer to pay.

Trump was then asked why he would impose tariffs that were “hurting American businesses.”

He inherited "low inflation" from a Democrat both times. But this is what he did to the economy during his first term -

He is telling the most successful companies in the world how to run their businesses.
Placing enormous costs on them, telling them where to build factories, who and how to hire, etc.

Sure, why not.

I mean, those big profit companies can absorb the Trump Tariff Tax, right?
(Or fire lots of workers, lose customers from the price hikes, and go broke.)

And 25% tariff on iPhones?
Sure, buy local - just wait 20 years for the US iPhone manufacturing industry and all its supporting supply industries to crank up to producing the first one.

Trump seems obsessed with money making schemes that don't stand the test of daylight.
When Trump sees a rainbow and sends out secret service agents to find the leprechauns and confiscate their pots of gold, you know he has finally lost all reason.
That day is coming closer.

But its a great business opportunity. For the illegal importation pirate industry.
Soon drug dealers will be standing on corners - selling 'tariff free' imports of Chinese made phones instead.

Lots of examples of illegal parallel importing in human history to evade taxes, duties, tariffs.
From duty free French wines landing on windswept British coastal beaches long ago at night to untaxed tobacco.

We went from "foreign countries will pay tariffs" to "American companies have to eat the tariffs" real quick.

Just like going from "Nobody wants to work anymore" to "they're stealing our jobs".

It's total bullshit ... the American people and I'm talking about the NON-WEALTHY Americans are the ones who will be forced to pay these ridiculous taxes. Because that's what tariffs are ... they're excise taxes on everything we buy from now on.

The idiots who voted for him should be forced to admit that he's destroying our economy for NOTHING!

Call up every Republican congressman they give money to and let them know they are going to have to "eat" the tariffs. Profits have to drop on our already slim margins? OK, first cost we are cutting if political donations to Republicans.
