No, Barron Trump was not rejected by Harvard, Melania says amid university battle
Source: USA Today via AOL
President Donald Trump is escalating his battle with Harvard University.
Harvard is one of several universities targeted by the Trump administration, which alleges schools aren't doing enough to protect Jewish students. Harvard has defied executive orders seeking to influence the school's curriculum and filed multiple lawsuits. On May 27, the New York Times and CNN reported Trump is poised to cancel the remaining federal contracts with Harvard, worth an estimated $100 million in total.
The fierce fight has led to questions about Trump's personal history with the university. Some have wondered if Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump's son Barron Trump, 19, was rejected from the university.
"Cant help but wonder how many Trumps got rejected by Harvard," Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., mused on a social media post that received more than 40,000 views.

(124,971 posts)Trump can hate Harvard easily enough because it's the flagship Ivy League school and he didn't go there ,while a lot of people he hates did - including Obama, who was the president of the Harvard Law Review. . His jihad against Harvard goes back to his first administration, if not before.
During this period, Harvard was also the target of a high-profile lawsuit alleging anti-Asian bias in admissions, a case supported by Trumps Department of Justice. Although Harvard ultimately prevailed in court, the administrations scrutiny of elite institutions continued, including investigations into alleged unreported foreign funding...

(3,762 posts)I doubt he would have even applied to Harvard, knowing how Daddy Trump feels about the place.

(124,971 posts)All those elite colleges have a long tradition of legacy admissions. If your daddy is a rich somebody, an alumnus or otherwise, you're automatically accepted even if you can barely tie your shoes, because daddy has money and might donate a building or an endowed chair, as long as it's named after him. If your daddy is POTUS and rich, so much the better. I can't imagine that any college would have rejected Barron's application. But Trump wouldn't have wanted his son, who is much taller than he, is to go to Harvard, where he did not go and against which he declared jihad years ago, and where Obama was president of the Law Review.

(2,370 posts)A billionaire's and former President's son? Thats basically guaranteed acceptance by any college, particularly Ivy league or most any other private university.
I know many want to hold them up on a pedestal, particularly now, but let's be honest, they care more about money then most anything else. Accepting someone like Trump's son and cozying up to him is a great way to try to get money added to their endowment. Thats a no brainer admission, even if trump was trump and gave them nothing, it's still a chance at hundreds of thousands or millions added to their endowment, and that chance is more important that some other merit admission that doesn't have rich parents who can give the school money.

(28,296 posts)The only way he got into any college was by paying someone to take his SAT's.
A professor at Fordham did state that Krasnov was the most goddamn dumbest student he ever had.
The only way that Krasnov was accepted to Wharton was because Krasnov's older brother was very good friends with the admissions officer.
Krasnov's claim that he graduated at the top his class has a huge hole in it. His name is not listed at Wharton as a student who graduated with honors.
Michael Cohen, when he worked for Krasnov, told Wharton that he would sue them back to the stone ages if it ever released Krasnov's grades.

(37,506 posts)I think that had quite a bit to do with Chump getting accepted.
Putting the shoe on the other foot, I can't see Chump making any "donations" to Harvard to do the same for his own son. I could be wrong, but I suspect that Chump thinks any college should accept Barron as a privilege.

(5,063 posts)and didn't get in (like he'd be going to NYU--which is a fine school, but it's not Harvard). How many times has Trump touted some member of his cabinet or coterie as having gone to Harvard? Harvard is the be-all and end-all for Donald Trump, and he was so proud of how well Barron had done in school--of *course* Trump expected his spawn to go to Harvard.
And every vile thing about her aside, Melania did what a mother's supposed to do when she lied and denied. No need to humiliate your kid further by going public about what schools he didn't get into. But *nobody* believes her. As it should be.

(37,506 posts)Barron's grades probably weren't good enough to get into Harvard on his own. He's not a typical legacy candidate since his own parents or grandparents didn't matriculate there. Harvard as well as other top schools will quietly bend their requirements for legacies, but not for other people's kids.
Sure Harvard knew that Barron's parents could afford the tuition, but they might have expected some kind of large donation (as wealthy families often do) to get their kid into a top school. Yes it's a shakedown but other wealthy families are fine with it, including Donald's own father who made a donation to University of Pennsylvania to get Donald accepted. Chump's attitude (I'm guessing here) was that Harvard should have been delighted to accept Barron Trump and his underwhelming grades, just because he's the son of a President. No additional donation would have been necessary, in Chump's estimation.
Now what's Harvard going to do? Lower their standards just for one kid who's not very smart? Why should they, when Harvard rejects more high-quality applicants every year than most prestige schools ever receive. They've probably "disappeared" the paperwork so that no one would ever know that Barron didn't get accepted.
That's how I see it.

(5,063 posts)my husband interviewed kids for admission to Princeton. He was stunned by the achievements of the applicants; not only did they all have perfect grades throughout high school and astoundingly high SATs--several perfect scores--but they all had outstanding talents in the arts/sports/community service. Community service was weighted heavily: things like starting community gardens and after-school programs for poor neighborhoods. I suspect Harvard looks for much the same in their applicants, and I doubt that Barron had anything to offer beyond good grades and test scores.
A doctor friend of mine told me his grandson was applying to Princeton and expected to be accepted. The kid had the grades and the test scores, but his "only" extra-curricular activity was being a chess grand master. I told my friend that if the kid wanted to get into Princeton, he'd better start a chess club in some underserved school or some other activity showing his intent to give back to the community some of the benefits he had received from being a smart kid. My friend scoffed.
The kid didn't get into Princeton. He's very happy at the University of Chicago.

(37,506 posts)My own experience is with University of Notre Dame where the competition for acceptance is just as intense.
Also what about those recent news stories where celebrities got their children into a highly competitive school (grades weren't good enough, but we found another way) by getting them admitted through varsity athletic scholarships?
Now that I think about it, Harvard could have accepted Barron Chump as a varsity basketball player and nobody would have batted an eye. If they don't have varsity basketball, OK what about ice hockey? I don't even know if he's athletically inclined, but it wouldn't have mattered. The college coaches and athletic directors have a lot of leeway in offering varsity scholarships and in some cases, it has encouraged abuse and fraud.
