Ron Johnson suggests he might not run for reelection

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) on Wednesday suggested that he might not run for reelection in 2028, possibly resulting in a race for an open Senate seat in a notable battleground state in a few years.

“I learned in my second run, when I absolutely meant ‘second and final,” you can’t say never, never, okay?” Johnson said during a Milwaukee Press Club event on Wednesday when asked about a 2028 run. “I don’t want to,” he added. “Yeah, I’d like to dig my heels in now, set this nation on a sustainable course and then go home.”

In the 2022 midterms, Johnson narrowly won over his Democratic opponent Mandela Barnes. Johnson’s race had been seen as a chance for Democrats to take down a sitting Senate Republican in a state that former President Biden had narrowly clinched two years prior.

Johnson first became a senator in the wake of a 2010 election in which he made his way to victory on a Tea Party-fueled wave that assisted in Republicans securing the House that year.

Yes, in 2010 here in Wisconsin, Democrats controlled the state government with a Democratic governor. But too many Democrats were pissed at Obama for not getting single payer healthcare so they decided not to vote in that midterm election while Republicans turned out to vote like it was their duty. The result?
In a single election the state flipped from total Democratic control to total Republican control. Scott Walker was elected governor and Ron Johnson beat Russ Feingold for the Senate seat.
When Democrats choose not to vote for the Democratic candidate, or not vote at all,
bad things happen. Sadly, we just cannot seem to learn from that lesson.

15 years later, you all are STILL trying to climb out of that muck. Between Walker, Eddie Munster, and the clown David Clarke bringing Putin into the state, it has been a disaster. I even remember the two efforts to recall Walker when the media showed people loading boxes and boxes of petitions onto trucks... yet that failed.

Then there has been the whole nightmare of the state Supreme Court.

All I can do is send vibes to Tony Evers and Democrats there try to help them keep on keeping on!

Just think about it: Republicans will be too frightened to show up for public ANYTHING as they try to campaign to keep their seats in Congress in 2026. They're too scared shitless right now to show up for town halls, and they know that public campaign events will have the same result: righteously angry constituents making their voices heard.

Here in ruby-red Montana, Ryan Zinke will just arrange private campaign events with only invited Republican voters, and sadly, they will vote him back in. But in less solidly red states, I hope we will see more Republicans like Johnson say they will not be running again. Their stated reason will be, of course, that they want to spend more time with their families.

This news makes me a little gleeful, I have to say!
