WASHINGTON (AP) The Department of Homeland Security is putting more than 500 sanctuary jurisdictions across the country on notice that the Trump administration views them as obstructing immigration enforcement as it attempts to increase pressure on communities it believes are standing in the way of the presidents mass deportations agenda.
The department on Thursday published a list of the jurisdictions and said each one will receive formal notification that the government has deemed them noncompliant and if theyre believed to be in violation of any federal criminal statutes. The list was published on the departments website. These sanctuary city politicians are endangering Americans and our law enforcement in order to protect violent criminal illegal aliens, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said in a press release.
The Trump administration has repeatedly targeted communities, states and jurisdictions that it says arent doing enough to help Immigration and Customs Enforcement as it seeks to make good on President Donald Trumps campaign promises to remove millions of people in the country illegally.
The list was compiled using a number of factors, including whether the cities or localities identified themselves as sanctuary jurisdictions, how much they complied already with federal officials enforcing immigration laws, if they had restrictions on sharing information with immigration enforcement or had any legal protections for people in the country illegally, according to the department.

(153,697 posts)that Philly was on the list and our governor (Josh Shapiro) said the state was ready (at least him in his capacity as governor since our AG is GOP) to fight any funding cuts.

(153,697 posts)But I know here in Philly, the policy went into effect back in 2016 and our current mayor has sort of renamed it "A Welcoming City" but it's basically the same thing. Plus we have a lot of Quakers around here and they have had a couple lawsuits against the administration regarding ICE barging into their houses of worship to snatch the undocumented!

(21,608 posts)Waaay back in the last yrs of the Vietnam War I was in Art College. Our draft counselor was a Quaker! Not your average counselor! 😄
I love Phillidelphia. My sister was there for a year in grad school. Her adorable apt was on a corner of the trolley turning, but got used to it.
Anyway, went to visit her several times. We even visited occasionally after she returned home. The Liberty Bell, rhe Art Museum, the Italian Market, and the area with a bunch of cool clothing, and Craft stores.
Good times!

(153,697 posts)especially around where I live. I remember back when I was in overnight Girl Scout camp (early '70s), they had a Sunday "service" given by Quakers. We sat on a large round wooden platform and listened to what was sort of a conversational discussion of things. I really don't recall what the content was but it was a low-keyed "plain" type of thing.

(21,608 posts)That counselor also taught a World 's Religions class..
We visited a Jewish temple, a Buddhist temple, maybe something Christian /or Catholic [my arena so didn't pay much attention], a Japanese Tea Ceremony at Japsn House [near the UN, in a lovely traditional paper and bamboo screened room] with green tea before it became more popular decades later, and yes, up to his home area to a Quaker's Meeting House.
I was going to to say "two", but now I'm getting a vague memory of possibly going to a Hindu Temple in Queens.
So the only major religion's house of worship we didn't go to was a Mosque.
It was a great class!
