Officers with the Department of Homeland Security briefly detained a staff member in Rep. Jerry Nadlers (D-N.Y.) Manhattan office during an incident on Wednesday, as protests took place outside an immigration courthouse in the same federal facility as the representatives office.
The incident, first reported by the news outlet Gothamist on Friday, was captured on video. In the recording, a DHS officer can be heard saying that members of Nadlers staff were harboring rioters in their office while another officer cuffs a crying staffer.
Im a federal officer, the DHS official said to a second staff member in the video posted by Gothamist, adding we have the right to check the office. The second staff member, who can be seen initially blocking the officers entry to a private area in the office, asked whether the officers had a warrant to search the space, to which the officer replied negatively. The staff member eventually acquiesced, allowing the officer to walk through the area.

President Trump and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are sowing chaos in our communities, using intimidation tactics against both citizens and non-citizens in a reckless and dangerous manner. In the most recent and deeply troubling incident, DHS agents forcefully entered my Congressional office and handcuffed a member of my staff, Nadler said, adding that he was alarmed by the aggressive and heavy-handed tactics DHS is employing in New York City and across the country.

Trump has given permission to use these aggressive and intimidating tactics--and is probably having a good laugh at the expense of the staffer who was detained and handcuffed!!
I am hoping this Nadler staff person will be given some good lawyers by the Democrats.

(16,414 posts)In previous political eras, the detainment of a congressmans aide by federal law enforcement agents and the search of his office without presenting a judicial warrant might have prompted an outcry, Mr. Nadler said on Saturday. But the current Republican majority in Congress staunchly supports Mr. Trumps immigration agenda, Mr. Nadler said, and has remained mostly silent as the president pushes the boundaries of executive power.
That leaves even a member of Congress with little recourse, he said.
The Trump administration is really using totalitarian or even authoritarian practices, Mr. Nadler said. We have to fight them. We dont want to be a fascist country.
