Hassett: Trump will have 'a wonderful conversation' this week with Xi

Source: ABC News

June 1, 2025, 11:53 AM

White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said Sunday that he expects President Donald Trump to speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week on tariffs.

"President Trump, we expect, is going to have a wonderful conversation about the trade negotiations this week with President Xi. That's our expectation,” Hassett told anchor George Stephanopoulos on ABC News' "This Week" on Sunday.

Currently, China has a 30% tariff level for goods coming into the U.S., which is reduced from the original 145% Trump levied. A 90-day reprieve from the 145% tariffs was given with the intent that the two countries would negotiate a wider trade deal.

Hassett said he was unsure of the exact date the two leaders would plan to speak to each other. "I'm not sure, George, because you never know in international relations, but my expectation is that both sides have expressed a willingness to talk. And I'd like to also add that people are talking every day, so [U.S. Trade Representative] Jamieson Greer, his team and President Xi's team in China, they're talking every day trying to move the ball forward on this matter."

We all know there will be nothing "wonderful" about the conversation.

The best thing that could happen is a a capitulation by Trump and a return to the way the tariff structure was before Trump screwed with our economy. But the damage has already been done regardless.

It's a "wonderful conversation", or a "beautiful bill" or a "perfect call". Shut the fuck up already with that bullshit.

9. Media stenographers (including many DU posters) adopt the regime's naming of things

So they talk about retaliatory tariffs against US, when in fact the April 2nd US tariffs were retaliatory against trade grievances US has with other countries (including non-tariff barriers).

DU posters and media stenos call it the Big Beautiful Bill instead of Big Billionaire Bill (per Earl Grey) or Big Bad Bill. (Not you; you correctly put it in quotes).

Folks, don't adopt the regime's name for things or if you must, put it in quotes.

4. Real effective tariff tax against China is more like 54%. Plus many non-tariff barriers tRump imposing

Electronic components that previously faced a 25% Section 301 tariff now effectively cost 55% more due to the additional 30% base tariff. Telecommunications equipment jumps to 45% (15% Section 301 + 30% base), while automotive parts reach 40% (10% Section 301 + 30% base). Even consumer electronics, which had a relatively modest 7.5% Section 301 tariff, now face a 37.5% effective rate.

USPS shipments from China now face a specialized 54% tariff rate regardless of product type. This rate applies independently from (and often in addition to) both the 30% base tariff and any applicable Section 301 duties. The punitive structure appears designed specifically to discourage direct-to-consumer shipments from Chinese sellers and platforms.

As if the percentage weren’t burdensome enough, there’s also a mandatory $100 handling fee on these postal shipments.

This fee applies regardless of the item’s value, creating absurd situations where a $50 purchase suddenly costs $150 before any tariffs are even calculated.

The contrast with private carriers is stark: shipments arriving via FedEx, UPS, or DHL remain subject to the standard tariff structure (though still affected by the layering of Section 301 and base tariffs). This policy effectively transforms USPS from the budget-friendly shipping option into the most expensive one for Chinese imports.

The handling fee is a non-tariff barrier. This kind of non-tariff barrier is exactly what tRump claims China is doing: using non-tariff barriers.

Chinese shipping to the West Coast ports effectively ended on +/- Mid-April. The supply chain warehouses are just about depleted of their Chinese goods. Sooner rather than later, the coming economics will force the Taco-Turd to again "chicken-out" on his insane tariffs. Meanwhile, inflation/stagflation continues to rise as does unemployment and interest rates -- the Turd's economic Recession is already here and the Turd's economic Depression is coming and fast approaching.

trump wouldn't have any other kind with another dictator. He only does his "nasty" talks with countries that believe in and practice democracy. He and Xi will have plenty to compare, and lots of information for trump to share with Xi... which will make Xi very happy, as he knows exactly how to play trump to a "T" to get everything he needs out of him (even if it says just the opposite in the media. Gotta play up how big, strong, and touch trump was to him, ya know). I'm so tired of our country being run by the epitome of pre-school kids, the ones who don't yet know how to share and for whom the whole world is all about "them."
