GOP rift could see more than 50 senators rebel against Trump: report

Source: Raw Story

June 2, 2025 9:16AM ET

Republican senators are about to launch into infighting as they struggle to pass President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” according to a report from Politico. Highlighting a faction of the party it calls “Medicaid moderates,” the news outlet noted that these GOP members are “ideologically diverse” but all share concerns about what the House-passed version of the spending bill does to Medicaid and health care overall.

“I would hope that we would elect not to do anything that would endanger Medicaid benefits as a conference,” Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) said in an interview. “I’ve made that clear to my leadership. I think others share that perspective.” Senator Jim Justice (R-WV), a former governor, agreed the cuts made by the House are a “real issue.” “They haven’t done anything to really cut into the bone except that one thing,” Justice added. ”That’s gonna put a big burden on the states.” However, Politico reports there are some senators who want “to further tighten the House’s bill.

This includes making stricter work requirements or reducing the provider tax.” “I’d be damned disappointed if a Republican majority with a Republican president didn’t make some reforms,” said Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND). “The provider tax is a money laundering machine. … If we don’t go after that, we’re not doing our jobs.” Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) is still pushing for changes to how states and the federal government split spending on Medicaid.

The federal government now picks up 90 percent of the cost for those who are made eligible for Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. According to the report, the House nixed an effort to reduce that percentage. One idea being floated to create some common ground on the issue is to phase in the cost percentage change. However, Politico said this “is still likely to be a nonstarter for 50 GOP senators.”

"Don't worry, the GOP moderates will come to the rescue.Kavanaugh won't be confirmed." I turn on my TV and see Susan Collins in the well of the Senate explaining why she will be voting for him after all. I have burned so many times, I will only believe it when I see it. Republican elected officials in the Trump era all have the spine of Jellyfish (& if they don't, they are soon ex-Republican elected officials).

If for some reason some of them DO grow a spine, I will be pleasantly surprised, but I'll never expect it. They've shown us who they are over and over again.

The Dems should point out to all of the Republican Senators that:

THERE IS NO F'ING LEGISLATIVE BRANCH OF GOVERNMENT IN A TYRANNY OR DICTATORSHIP. They should COLLECTIVELY consider a Rebellion at this time as JOB SECURITY.........Same for the Supreme Court Republican justices realizing there is no JUDICIAL BRANCH IN A TYRANNY OR DICTATORSHIP........

Typical RawStory

First, the headline makes it sound like “more than 50” republican senators would oppose the bill. But that’s not what Politico reported, in the last couple of sentences about the bill. Specially Politico reported that a proposed compromise on one issue is “likely “ to be a nonstarter for “50” Republican Senators (not more than 50),

We already KNOW that there is at least 1 - SPAWN of Ron Paul - who has basically said the bill is DOA to him. Period. He wants the debt limit increase removed - https://www.democraticunderground.com/10143470183

The Politico article ALSO mentioned this -

Republicans already have one all-but-guaranteed opponent in Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky so long as they stick to their plan to raise the debt limit as part of the bill. They also view Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson as increasingly likely to oppose the package after spending weeks blasting the bill on fiscal grounds.

Paul + 50 others (the latter who would complain about a "phase-in" of changes) = "more than 50 "rebel" (with the reasons for doing so going beyond just the "phased" change).

Sometimes an article is an article.

The government needs to pay for the obligations it's already on the hook for, not add trillions on top of it.

SPEND. SPEND. SPEND. Republican policies harm America's businesses.

Who are we supposed to be? Charlie Brown always thinking that Lucy won’t pull the ball away? We now have a whole conference of Susan Collins. I don’t trust any Republican to do the right thing at any point. I pay attention to Raw Story because they publish some good stuff, they also run crap articles like this all the time. Because people write them. So they publish them.

That doesn’t mean that they’re true or that they’re based on any reality at all. The Republicans are going to try to shove this grotesque bill through. Because Trump wants his “big beautiful Bill“. The first bill in 2017 that was primarily focused on tax reductions for entities that did not need tax reductions was bad enough. This one is even worse by an exponential amount.

This bill would not just make those tax deductions that none of the wealthy corporations and individuals needed permanent, but would gut the rural healthcare system in the United States. It is not hyperbole to say that tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths would result from this bill.

This bill does so many bad things in one package that it is damn near a country killer. Coupled with the insane tariffs that are on and off again this could usher us into a depression. Then consider the current immigration insanity where we’re gutting the agricultural sector (and the rule of law) and I see a deadly trifecta brewing.

I don’t know why the Republicans hate the United States so much, but if you go back through history it’s very clear the only Republican that truly cared about the union in this country was Abraham Lincoln. It’s all been downhill since then.
