Houthis Attack Israel for First Time in War

Yemens Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for a missile launched at Israel, marking the Iranian-backed militias first attack in the fast-expanding war. A military spokesman for the Houthis said the group had carried out the first military operation using a barrage of ballistic missiles targeting sensitive Israeli military sites.
Israels military said on social media that it had identified a missile launched from Yemen and intercepted the threat with aerial defense systems. There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.

Houthis Attack Israel for First Time Since Iran War Began
Israel says it intercepted missile fired by the Tehran-backed Yemeni militants; in Saudi Arabia, Iranian strike wounds 12 U.S. troops
Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi militants attacked Israel for the first time since the war broke out, after sitting out the conflict throughout its first month. The Israeli military said it spotted a missile launched from Yemen and intercepted the threat.
The attack followed an Iranian missile strike on the Prince Sultan air base in Saudi Arabia on Friday, which wounded American troops and damaged several U.S. refueling aircraft, according to U.S. and Saudi officials.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the biggest challenge once the war ends would be preventing Iran from imposing tolls on ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz, calling the prospect illegal and dangerous to the world. He also said the war would go on another two to four weeks.

The Houthis, who were curiously staying out of the war on Iran, have just said that their "fingers are on the trigger". They said they were "ready to respond at any moment should developments warrant it". Experts have suggested Houthis to be part of "Iran's three-stage strategy" in the region.
Simultaneously, Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency reported that the Houthis and other "resistance groups" were on full alert and might join Tehran's ongoing fight, warning that it could lead to closure of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the narrow passage at the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula that controls traffic for sea vessels accessing the Suez Canal via the Red Sea.
. . .
The Bab el-Mandeb links the Red Sea and effectively the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea, and further to the Atlantic Ocean. The route is key to the Asia-Europe trade. If the Houthis, who have long threatened and even tried to choke Bab el-Mandeb, move to block the route, the fallout could be as severe, especially at a time when the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf remains choked amid the war.

(51,237 posts)their military capabilities are limited so they can't completely close the strait, just do as much damage as they can.
Asian and European countries use that strait a lot for accessing the Suez canal so those countries might get involved militarily. The US has bombed the Houthis last year. Hegseth posted the plans out over a Signal chat. The Saudis also bomb them in response to attacks on their territory.

(8,742 posts)It is a matter of taking into account that the supply chain takes 10 more days and 25% more fuel to do that. This extra cost eventually gets absorbed into the whole supply chain, raising the cost to ship goods by a few percent. This beats being moored at the entrance of the Strait of Hormuz waiting for authorization to go through or cessation of hostilities.
