Mortgage Giant Fannie Mae Will Soon Accept Crypto-Backed Homebuying Loans

Source: Yahoo Finance

Fannie Mae (FNMA) is set to soon begin accepting cryptocurrency-backed mortgages, according to an announcement on Thursday from mortgage originator Better Home & Finance (BETR) and the crypto exchange Coinbase Global (COIN).

Shares in Better Home surged by as much as 12% after the announcement before pulling back slightly, while Coinbase traded down by roughly 1.1%. Mortgage-backed securities giant Fannie Mae slid by roughly 4.6% in the over-the-counter market, according to Yahoo Finance data.

A new product launched by the two companies will allow individuals to originate mortgages with Better Home that conform to Fannie Mae standards while using bitcoin (BTC-USD) or USD Coin (USDC-USD) as collateral for the loan, the companies said in a press release on Thursday.

6. I know ... what could possibly go wrong?

I'm a homeowner in the city of Pittsburgh, PA. It's not a fancy neighborhood, just middle-class area with mostly older houses. I get at least 2 or 3 post cards and notices every month telling me that so-and-so would buy my house for cash immediately. No questions asked!

I'm sure these are general mailings going out to all the owners in the area. Maybe they get a few nibbles, I don't know. I just know that I would never sell to those sharks. And they're just waiting to snatch up properties from us older Americans.

2. How come "mortgage giant" Fannie Mae's share price has been a rollercoaster ever since The Rapist's election?

https://uk.finance.yahoo.com/quote/FNMA/

On 28th Oct 2024 it was about 1.3 (before then a fair amount of variation, but slowly, and there had been the interest rate changes); by 11th Nov 2024 it was 3.2. By 13th Jan 2025 it was 7.0; by 8th Sep 2025 14.6. By today, it's come back down to 4.86.

If it's a "giant" in a market with an underlying base of literal bricks and mortar, how come it varies like it's a betting market? Because it makes damn fool decisions like accepting bitcoin for house deposits?

7. I thought crypto had just crashed? I don't get it - money based on even less than our real currency.

All I know is, money - whatever the currency - seems to be floating to the top of society only.
