Hormuz Traffic Rises to Highest in Weeks

(Bloomberg) -- Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has climbed to its highest levels since the early days of the war, as more countries secure apparent safe-passage agreements with Iran.

The waterway saw 21 ships transit over the weekend as more energy-starved governments negotiate to extract vessels, cargoes and crews from the Persian Gulf, strengthening Tehran’s grip on the waterway. That’s the highest two-day total since the first days of March, when traffic was winding down.

Iranian vessels continue to dominate traffic, but on Sunday a tanker carrying Iraqi crude made its way through the strait, after Iran said it would grant an exemption to “brotherly Iraq”. India — which has negotiated the exit of some ships and even taken Iranian liquefied petroleum gas for the first time in years — has now seen eight of its LPG tankers come through.

Though the number of vessels is still a fraction of what it was before the war, when about 135 vessels were passing regularly each day, more countries are securing transits. Last week, two China-linked container ships made the crossing on a second attempt. Two Japan-linked vessels have also passed.

To the winner goes the spoils, or the tolls in this case.

3. There is NOBODY that wants "the great Satan" lording over the Strait

And the US is in no position to do anything of the sort unless we want to commit 200,000 troops to occupy the entire coastline of Iran.

I would not be surprised to see this end with a new doctrine that has Iran at least nominally in charge of managing passage through Hormuz, charging modest tolls to ships it feels have a legitimate purpose in the Gulf. Perhaps there will be a multi-lateral presence, but nobody wants the US to control any of this.

We have no allies now, other than Netanyahu -- only back-stabbers who are momentarily not using their daggers.

Remember that Russia and China have much more business in the Gulf than we do. They aren't about to let the Trump rule this and line his own pockets with toll money -- unless he gives Russia and China things that hurt America even more.

Every day that passes, Iran is wondering why they didn't set up a toll booth on the Strait long ago. They could get very used to this.

Here is my prediction. A year from now, Trump and his army will be long gone, but Iran will still be "administering the safety" of the Strait, still requiring permission and tolls to pass.

When he said they can open the straights themselves, they gave him the one-finger salute and did just that.
