The New Jersey State Police will take over public safety operations outside of Delaney Hall on Friday afternoon, while also establishing marked protected peaceful protest zones amid weeklong unrest at the federal immigrant detention facility.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill and state Attorney General Jennifer Davenport announced the state takeover at a press conference at the State Police compound in West Trenton.
The state is already working with advocacy groups and faith leaders to move protesters into the designated areas, officials said. In addition, State Police set up vehicle checkpoints near the facility to reduce traffic and improve safety.
We know what ICE has done in other states, and we know American citizens lost their lives, and I refuse to let that happen in New Jersey, Sherrill said. We all need to do everything we can to cool things down now.
