A group of Senate Democrats is asking the Treasury Departments internal watchdog to investigate whether the agency dedicated resources to creating a $250 featuring President Donald Trumps face despite legal hurdles preventing the Treasury Department from doing so.
In a letter to the Treasurys Office of Inspector General sent Tuesday, the group of four Democrats are demanding to know if, how and why department officials allegedly pushed the $250 bill project forward despite federal law indicating only deceased presidents may appear on currency and Congress has yet to pass legislation permitting so. Citing recent Washington Post and New York Times reports, the lawmakers ask whether officials involved in the investigation used resources in a manner that constitutes waste, fraud, and abuse.
Given the cost of living crisis across the United States, it is disturbing that the Treasury Secretary sees no problem focusing the Treasurys attention on developing an illegal $250 bill instead of addressing the real economic challenges facing the country, the Democrats, led by Senator Elizabeth Warren, the ranking member of the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, wrote.
Among a series of questions the Democrats are asking the Treasury Departments Inspector General to investigate, they want to know how much time and money were spent, as well as which staff were dedicated to the project. When reached for comment, the Treasury Inspector General office told The Independent: We have received the subject letter but have no further comment regarding the matter."
