(55,745 posts)from various countries and some people are still alive and trapped and are texting friends and relatives. It's the crucial 72 hour time frame. The biggest problems are issues with the inability to get into the areas hardest hit since it's absolutely chaos everywhere. Roads and airports are not open or safe. Aftershocks are slowing efforts down, too. People/rescuers are arriving and leaving, and there is very little origination from the hapless government that no one trusts with real info and numbers. Some social media sites have just been opened by the govt since they banned it during decades of dictatorship and corruption.
They need huge machinery to remove tons of slabs of concrete and this is not arriving fast enough from foreign countries who were arriving today. Sniffer dogs have been finding people, alive and dead.
They say donate $ but to send it via the Red Cross since it is safer that way and to use a credit card which can verify/insure its use.
They need food, medical supplies, but mostly shelter for the thousands of displaced citizens. Venezuela WAS already suffering now it is a million times worse.
