Jack Smith says he's 'very concerned what's going to happen next election' under Trump

Source: CNBC

Former special counsel Jack Smith on Thursday said that under President Donald Trump, "We are facing an attack on the rule of law," and that he is "very concerned about what's going to happen next election"

Smith also said that a potential indictment of him by the Department of Justice "could happen" given Trump's animus toward him for prosecuting the president in two separate criminal cases before Trump returned to the White House.

Smith told Nicolle Wallace on MS NOW's "Deadline: White House" that "it angers me" to see public servants "demonized for doing their jobs" by the Trump administration for their work on cases seen as hostile to the president and his allies or for other reasons.

"I think it's really important that we stand up for them and let them know that there are a lot of people out there who back them and who are with them, and that's not just the people who have been who've been targeted and fired for no reason for doing their jobs," he said.

And have been since the 2024 election.

The years of free and fair elections may very well be over forever. The fascists are in control of all three branches, they're entrenched, and removing them will take an Herculean effort, if at all possible.

It sucks, to put it mildly.

Former special counsel Jack Smith stunned online viewers by revealing how he prepared for prosecution by the Trump administration.

During an appearance on MS NOW, Smith spoke about hiring lawyers when he left his job as a federal prosecutor because he led two criminal investigations into Donald Trump, including for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the discovery of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago.

"I resigned as special counsel. I know I need to get a lawyer because the president has said he wants to jail me for doing my job," Jack Smith explained. "And so I retain lawyers, as soon as that becomes public, the president and the Justice Department target that law firm."

Online, viewers reacted to Smith's account of how his fears about the Trump administration came true. Veteran political scientist Norman Ornstein responded by describing the administration as "American Gestapo" in a post on X.

"The retribution is simply staggering," wrote civil rights lawyer Leslie Proll.

"We are in such high cotton here," reacted columnist Sophia A. Nelson. "And nobody in power who can stop him or his minions gives a d—."

The team at MS NOW’s “The Weekend” was sent into ‘delirious’ laughter Sunday morning after the network played a video montage of President Donald Trump touting his administration’s “fair” system of justice and supposed end to political prosecutions.

The montage was queued to provide context on a recent interview of former special counsel Jack Smith, who revealed the steps he took to prepare for potential prosecution by the Trump administration in retaliation for his investigation.

“Never again will the immense power of the state be weaponized to persecute political opponents,” Trump can be heard saying in the video montage. “My administration has acted swiftly and decisively to restore fair, equal and impartial justice under the constitutional rule of law.”

As the clip montage concluded, a smirking Jonathan Capehart struggled when trying to cite the countless examples of the Trump administration targeting the president’s political opponents with investigations and prosecutions.

“Perhaps on Earth 2 that is what Trump did, for those living here on Earth 1…” Capehart said before bursting into a wheezing laugh. “We've seen the exact opposite as his own personal law firm going after his perceived enemies while rewarding his allies!”

Capehart continued to laugh before apologizing and conceding that the outburst may land him and his MS NOW colleague “totally in trouble.”
