'No Going Back': France Was Reportedly Prepared for a 'Shooting War' if Trump Moved on Greenland

A stunning report in The Wall Street Journal described a marathon meeting of U.S. European allies who had come to view the country as a security risk under President Donald Trump.

Citing national security, Trump has repeatedly insisted that the U.S. must acquire Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory in the North Atlantic and Arctic Circle. The U.S. already maintains one military base on the island and, under an agreement, may increase its military presence there. However, Trump has indicated he wants Greenland to become a U.S. territory.

On Jan. 3, the U.S. military raided Venezuela and abducted then-President Nicolas Maduro before bringing him to the U.S. to face drug trafficking charges. Shortly after the raid, Trump reiterated his desire for Greenland. So concerned were U.S. allies in Europe, they met to discuss how to approach the president, according to a report published by the Journal on Sunday.

The leaders met at the European Council headquarters in Brussels. Cameras and phones were not allowed, and each head of government had been told to come alone. French President Emmanuel Macron was blunt in his assessment. He had just deployed French soldiers to Greenland to participate in Denmark’s Operation Arctic Endurance, in which Canada, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden also participated. The Journal reported that the forces there – or at least the French and Danish ones – were prepared for a hot war with the U.S. Around the five-hour mark of the meeting, Macron addressed his counterparts:

1. One day people will regret that Trump caused Europe to rearm.

Western Europe has been the site of countless wars over the past 1,000 years. Since WWII there has been nothing but peace. Why? Because they all disarmed and agreed to let NATO and the U.S. keep the peace.

That worked so well the countries of Western Europe have enjoyed decades of peace and prosperity.

That didn't suit Putin's plans so he installed Krasnov in the White House to destroy NATO and break alliances. Mission accomplished.

Now all the countries in Western Europe are arming up again and it's only a matter of time...I might not live to see it but I'll bet my kids will.

Yes, Europeans are boosting their military budgets, but there is a difference between now and 100 years ago.

Working on the legacy of NATO and the EU, Europe now attempts to solve their internal differences through negotiation. Talking, not shooting. Their rearmament is now focused on outside threats to the group, not internal rifts. Their manufacturing standards have been standardized across the continent and their militaries have been integrated to work together seamlessly.

While the US maintains a tenuous membership in NATO it is more and more becoming a side show, an afterthought to Europeans working in their own defense.

Europeans fighting amonst themselves is one of the least of our worries. In fact, we are becoming one of the external threats the Eurpopeans are planning against.

But it's good for NATO, or the EU really, to be able to defend themselves, aggressively if needed, and even go on offense when appropriate. Modern European nations need that capability, at least right now, with Russia raising dust.

It's good for us to not have an oversized responsibility for their security, and I think they resent us a bit for it, anyhow.

It impacts our projection of force based on self interest, sure. But we're still in NATO, and we can still fly out of Germany to defend Europe. There will just be more European jets and pilots in the air with us, and we won't have the default last word on strategy.

Like everything, it's a mixed bag, IMHO.

7. That last section of that article discusses Europe rejecting US technology!

The report highlighted that European nations are accelerating their divestment from U.S. technology.

“Authorities from France to the Netherlands are quietly removing American tech from their systems, adopting European open-source software and urging civil servants to no longer use Microsoft Teams or Office,” it said. “Belatedly, they are spending hundreds of billions of dollars to try to boost Europe’s own private space firms, AI companies, and data centers, to avoid leaning on U.S. juggernauts.”
