NATO has taken a major step toward modernizing its airborne surveillance capabilities by selecting Swedens Saab GlobalEye early warning aircraft as the preferred replacement for its decades-old AWACS fleet, according to Reuters.
As Donald Trump was landing in Türkiye for this weeks NATO Summit, the alliance made the decision to choose Swedens company over Boeing. The proposed acquisition could be worth as much as $4.5 billion and includes the purchase of up to 10 aircraft. If negotiations proceed as expected, Saab says deliveries could begin in 2030, with each aircraft expected to cost between $400 million and $450 million.
The decision marks a significant win for Saab over U.S. aerospace giant Boeing, whose E-7 Wedgetail was also competing for the contract. NATOs existing Boeing E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft have served since the Cold War, but alliance leaders have long called for a new generation of airborne surveillance is needed to address evolving threats, including drone swarms and increasingly complex battlefields......................

(25,118 posts)When only a few companies compete for certain very expensive products, they rarely decrease their prices on a bid in order to win the contract. If they do, then other buyers that have already paid for a similar product will feel gypped (and rightfully so.)
Lockheed-Martin, McDonnell Douglas, Boeing, Airbus and just a few others had a monopoly, especially to western governments. I'll make an informed guess that there was a lot of collusion at the higher levels of these companies (also sharing of executives.)

SAAB GlobalEye is installed in a Bombardier Global 6000 business jet. E-7 Wedgetail is installed in a Boeing 737-800. The Global 6000 burns 250 gallons per hour less fuel than the 737-800 and its cheaper to maintain, doesnt take up as much ramp space and doesnt need one of those truck mounted ladders to board like an airliner does so it can use more of their airbases without having to buy a lot of ground support equipment.
If your mission only involves keeping one continent safe and you dont have generals who look at any Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance system and ask what else can we make this do? this is the better aircraft.
