Hi to everyone,
I'm new. I'm hoping this is the right place to post this. If not just tell me where. Thanks. I am 63, gay, recently widowed. I was married to a very loving and humble man for 41 years. Still mourning and have a really difficult time. I am joining tonight because....I don't know why. I've lurked here for so many years. Tonight when I came to check things out, it said "DU Members only", so, here I am.
I'm not great with computers so be patient, please. Thank you. I would like to add just a couple of things so you know I'm not a fake or poser. I love Salmon Enchanted Evening Sunday Post (my favorite part of DU), BoZarts pics, Elleng's pics, and many other folks on here that I cannot think of right now because I'm a little nervous and intimidated. I am usually outspoken but being recently widowed my world is not the same and I am trying to find myself again, so I may just lurk some more. It's nice to finally feel apart of the DU family. Thank you again!
EDIT:: WOW! I never imagined such a huge welcoming! THANK YOU ALL! It's kind of like meeting a rock star when I see names that I've only followed when I lurked and you're speaking directly to me! That's really nice! I hope to be a thoughtful contributor but for now I will mostly read and hang out. I'm still trying to pull myself together after the loss of my husband so I'm feeling very lost and uncertain. Again, THANK YOU ALL!

(139,422 posts)I really like your posts. I always felt like I would want you as a neighbor. I enjoy the laid back way you present yourself. The photos are awesome, such a real everyday life kind of way, the sunsets, sunrise, lake/river, "neighbors". I always get a kick out of those. Thank you for the welcome!

(18,181 posts)Welcome to Democratic Underground.
Members Only Posting - you bumped into. Let me try to explain what happened.....
Recently the sight has been putting up Error Messages - # 504. That could mean many things and for many reasons. The administrators of the site are right on top of these sorts of messages and why entry maybe blocked.
It could me the servers are malfunctioning, or some other thing is malfunctioning, or could mean too crowded/too much traffic, and a cause no one wants to contemplate - the site may have been hacked.
This Error Message episode generally happens around election time when the traffic on political sites dramatically increases. But off season a 504 Error notice is concerning to the admins who keep the location up and running. That is when the DU backroom becomes busy trying to figure out why people can not sign on, read, and comment to the site.
One way to force the site into a lower traffic volume - which maybe the cause of the error notice - too much traffic volume causing the problem - is to only leave the site open to current active members. A current active member has a yellow star next to their name in the comment section. Once you pass a probationary period you can elect to become an active member by paying an nominal annual dues.
Those who have not yet finished their probationary period or elect to not become a dues paying member are considered in visitor status rather than member status.
When you to came by and saw open to members only - it was during the Error # 508 page popping up. So the admins cranked the traffic volume down to explore and sort out why it was sending the Cloud Error Message - in hopes they could prevent the error message from popping up at all.
The site is still working on the Cloud Error Message episode that is still occasionally popping up intermittently. But these guy who are the admins here are tenacious about keeping the place up and running and humming.
Hope my explanation of why you bumped into a members only message was found and helps in understandings of what is what.

I do wish you the best on here and hoping you find friends. I am a single mom of an adult now, never been married. I grew up in south beach and boy do I miss being in the midst of my dear gay boyfriends. I think of them fondly, made me reply to you.

41 years may sound like a long, long time; but I am sure it was much too short for you.
You are still a young man, take your time to grieve.
Joining DU may have just helped you in the process more than anything you could ever done.

I can only imagine your courage in fighting to be with a man who helped make you and certainly vice versa.
I wish I had your courage and base of self that allowed what I can only imagine to be a relationship that allowed you to create, support and celebrate a life that is a full treasure chest of experiences that will sustain you on the darkest nights and continue to lead you to the many magical moments that your chest must be full of.
I can't wait to meet him....and get to know you.

(196 posts)Welcome. I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I've had some recent loss as well and, well... being kind of pragmatic, I know there's not a lot I can do for you except say time wears the edges off the bad part, but the good stuff starts to be easier to remember as well.
Just hang in there. Be needy with your friends and family if you have to. Or, as I usually do, donate some time and energy to a needy cause, feel good about doing some good despite being pretty lowly.
Also, kittens.I do highly recommend them for medicinal purposes of the heart.

(37,673 posts)You've clearly lurked for a while, and hope I gave you a chuckle when I was handling the TOONs posts. They've been part of DU since its beginning, and I jumped in to fill in gaps on two occasions (one a death of the person who originated the TOON tradition, and again when the then-current holder of the "TOONSmaster" mantle gave a "goodbye cruel world" post and abruptly quit). A personal emergency called me away from it and, frankly, emergency since passed, I kind of like having my mornings back, so I haven't returned to that role, but as part of DU's "Class of 2001", let me welcome you to non-lurker participation.

(1,209 posts)I am totally addicted to DU. DU has almost become my best friend. Actually, if you rate relationships on how much time you spend with them, then it is my best friend. I regret that I never did a formal introduction of myself. I just gave money and figured relationships would occur naturally. But, when people do introduce themselves like you have here, a lovely response follows. Enjoy your new friends! 🤟🏼🪷 It's always a good idea to preview your post. I just previewed mine and saw that google changed "gave" to "have" above so that my sentence said, "I just have money and figured the relationships would occur naturally". 😳
