When I hear "sliders", you know what I think of? Those little green turtles with a red stripe on their necks that we used to buy at Woolworth's.

How about "sandwichito?" That would chap TSF.

These turtles were common inexpensive pets until their connection to salmonella and other illnesses among children became obvious.

They were also sold with painted shells, which cannot have been good for the animals.

My mother was a registered nurse and most likely did not approve of such things for the reason you cite.
And also we were on various military bases in the 50's and 60's and the turtles were not sold
at the BX or commissary.

Also overseas we did not get current TV programs.

So there is quite a bit of pop culture I missed out on.

We had em.

We gave the one that lived to my mom's friend when it got to be 2+ inches. They donated it to the ?Staten Island Zoo when it reaches 5+ inches decades ago.
