Now I need to: find things to do during the day, adapt my spending now that my income has gone down, get enough exercise, and remember that nearly everybody who has just retired has to do the same things.

(1,465 posts)Been retired since 2012. At first you will feel a bit lost and lonely. Heck, I still wash clothes Sunday evenings!
The desire for the busyness fades and, sometimes, sitting on my porch with my doxie, my Kindle, my coffee and the birds singing is the only thing I do alllll day!
You are now your own boss! Enjoy!

(456 posts)I was a workaholic but I took to retirement quickly. Since you just retired, you don't have to do anything right now so relax, unwind, and enjoy the next couple of weeks. Think about the things you like and liked to do and see if you want to do them in retirement. For me, I didn't have time for reading or bowling ( I used to have a 175 average and now I have a 199 and 203 average in two leagues) so I got myself a library card and joined a bowling league. There are a number of sports like bowling, tennis, pickleball which are too physically demanding but they're great for socializing. I'd also recommend volunteering in community organizations.
Retirement used to be for old people who'd sit at home and watch the world go by. Today, retirees like me are still active and not stuck at home. I have a couple of friends who are retired and their busier than ever either working with the organizations they joined or taking trips.
Enjoy your retirement.

(14,269 posts)I've always wanted to do but have never had the time and I'm still checking things off. I would suggest making a list and checking out volunteer opportunities in your area or your town. In addition to other things, I've been a Selectman, Library Trustee and Planning Board member for the last 15 years and I know that most towns are desperate for people to get involved. All of this has kept me moving and kept my mind sharp.
