One paramedic got out of the ambulance to attempt to engage the person and the other tried to prevent the ambulance from being moved. That paramedic was forced to exit the ambulance when their safety became compromised.
Early on in the chase, Wisconsin Rapids officers deployed tire deflation devices in an attempt to safely end the chase, but those were unsuccessful. Later, the Wood County Sheriff's Office also attempted tire deflation without success.
Finally, Pittsville police officers were successful in deploying tire deflation devices, disabling the front passenger side tire of the ambulance. The suspect then drove the ambulance into a muddy field, where it became stuck. The driver refused commands to exit the ambulance.
The man was booked at the Wood County Jail on recommended charges of:
Disorderly conduct
Lewd and lascivious behavior
Operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent
Obstructing emergency personnel
Recklessly endangering safety
Threats to law enforcement
Operating while intoxicated (third offense)
Both the suspect and the patient inside the ambulance were uninjured. The patient's ambulance transport was not considered an emergency.
