His 4-part western saga fizzled out, leaving him a bit demoralized I think. This was a good project for him to work on with Freeman.
Those who don't like Costner, well, I think he is a good guy in general. Those in Aspen (where is lives most of the time now), consider him to be so, as apparently are his kids. When the locals have something good to say about a Hollywood celebrity, I think that is probably meaningful.

There are some historical inaccuracies, the Gatling Guns early in the war being a prime example. Nonetheless, it is quite good.
