I once had catfish taken from a waterway with lots of barge traffic. Catfish tasted like straight-up diesel fuel. When it comes to wild-caught fish, bottom-feeders aren’t on my menu. If it’s good, love me some catfish.

from a previous life. Some electrical utility guys had some down time and decided to cook fish in transformer oil. This was before knowledge about PCBs was generally available - even among those who worked with it. Supposedly nobody suffered ill effects. But that was almost 50 years ago when I heard this story, and it’d supposedly happened some years prior to that.

of California. This was out of necessity, as we had a worm bed for bait, fed by welfare commodity powdered milk & cornmeal. We would come back with 10-15 of them, with a few bluegill & Croppy, to boot. We'd, after cleaning them, dredge them in buttermilk and breading, and fry them up for dinner, feeding all five of us kids and Mom & Dad.
