Maricopa County election control dispute heads to court ahead of primary
PHOENIX (AZFamily) A legal fight over control of next months primary election in Maricopa County went before a judge Monday morning.
Maricopa County Recorder Justin Heap is facing off against county supervisors over who will oversee the July 21 primary election. The dispute is between factions within the Republican Party, not between Republicans and Democrats.
Security video released last week shows employees of the county recorders office removing a ballot scanner and ballots from the countys secure vault. County supervisors allege the action may be a crime, and the county attorney has assigned the matter to a special prosecutor.
The two sides appeared in a virtual courtroom Monday. Representing the recorder was James Rogers, an attorney for America First Legal Foundation, a firm started by top Trump advisor Stephen Miller.
