The race to be the new District 8 supervisor draws passionate candidates

The race for supervisor in San Francisco’s District 8 has drawn competition from several candidates, all of whom celebrate the area’s LGBTQ communities but offer different prescriptions for how to lead the expansive district forward.

The seat in District 8 — which includes the Castro, Glen Park, Noe Valley, Diamond Heights, Mission Dolores and Cole Valley — is currently occupied by Board of Supervisors President Rafael Mandelman, who is termed out and running for state Assembly.

The candidates include Manny Yekutiel, the owner of Manny’s cafe, bookstore, and civic events and gathering space in the Mission; Gary McCoy, a longtime aide to U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi; and Michael Nguyen, a patent attorney and drag performer.

In addition, Darshini Patel — a former DoorDash employee who helped launch the meal-delivery service in hundreds of markets and led get-out-the-vote efforts for Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign in New Hampshire in 2024, among other things — is also a candidate.
