SF Chronicle
At 89, the Golden Gate Bridge is aging more gracefully than other Bay Area infrastructure, but she still needs joint repair and frequent paint jobs to maintain a resplendent orange glow.
Officials at the Bridge Highway and Transportation District have incrementally raised tolls to pay for all that maintenance, while also funding buses and ferries to carry people between San Francisco and the North Bay. The next hike takes effect on Wednesday, July 1, and will raise tolls to $10.25 for people with FasTrak, up 50 cents from the current $9.75. Those paying through license plate accounts will have to shell out $10.50 for each crossing, while drivers who receive invoices will pay $11.25. Fares for transit will also go up, with commuters paying an additional 25 cents for every bus and boat trip.
Tolls and fares will rise again next year and in 2028, hewing to a phased five-year schedule that the district board approved in 2024. At the time, board directors were trying to patch a $220 million deficit. Since then the district has launched an ambitious seismic retrofit, with plans to add 38 shock absorbers and steel plates at the base of both towers. Teams of ironworkers and engineers manage day-to-day care of the span, setting up rigs for painters and replacing weather-beaten steel.
