Frank White vetoes special election for Jackson County assessor

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - In June, Jackson County legislators passed an ordinance to hold a special election regarding the county’s tax assessor. With less than a month to go before that election, the county’s executive has blocked that effort.

Frank White vetoed the ordinance on Friday afternoon because “it asks Jackson County taxpayers to spend millions of unbudgeted dollars on a special election that is both unnecessary and premature.”

The ordinance would ask voters whether the county tax assessor should no longer be a qualified appointee and instead be an elected position.

The Jackson County Legislature had initially passed the ordinance for a special election by a 6-3 vote. Assessor Gail McCann Beatty, who was appointed by White, has been the subject of controversy the last two years since the 2023 property tax assessments.
