A crashed plane has debris that lands. NJ is the most populous state in the nation. There is a likelihood that planes crashing into each other will kill, not only the passengers but also people on the ground.
Equipment needs to be replaced. They spend billions on new terminals and such bullshit. Instead, spend it on a new computer system.
United cancelled flights. These cancellations need to be permanent.

(4,412 posts)The one thing to note at airports, the local airport authority has the ground operations and are the ones who fund the terminal and other land based improvements. The Feds have the flight operations and safety responsibility, air traffic control and such There are two separate government entities and two separate funding streams that really don't mix. The Fed side is very complex and has been an issue for a long time. The real solution, which will be staggeringly expensive and time consuming to implement, is to build a whole new air traffic and flight operations control system, while maintaining and operating the current system until the new is ready to launch. The extra people power and base investment costs and likely disruption at time of changeover is likely what has kept Congress from tackling this and given this Congress seems to be little hope of that changing. The airlines have similar issues within their operations as their computer reservations, flight scheduling and other systems are antiquated by decades and will have the same cost/disruption issues in an industry that is mostly money losing. In short, given current leadership, I would expect no meaningful improvements beyond new decor in the terminals.
