Wake County DA (D) announces she will not seek re-election

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman announced Thursday that she will not run for another term in office after her current one ends late next year.

“This has been one of the most challenging personal decisions I have ever made,” Freeman said in Thursday. “By the end of this term, I will have had the amazing opportunity to serve the people of this state for over three decades—with the last 20 years as an elected leader in our local courts.

“It has been a tremendous honor to represent the citizens of Wake County, but I believe it is time to find new ways to serve the community and to give others the opportunity to bring new energy and vision to the critical role of District Attorney,” she said in her statement.

Freeman, a Democrat, was first elected Wake County DA in 2014. Her current term ends in December 2026. Although she has not yet said what she’ll be doing next, she expressed her commitment to her work for the rest of her term.
