Massive $5.1B data center proposed for Salem draws praise and pushback
SALEM, Ore. (KATU) Salem leaders are revealing new details about a proposed $5.1 billion data center that could become one of the largest private investments in the city's history.
California-based technology company Verrus is proposing to build Oakline at Mill Creek, a three-building data center campus and utility substation in the Mill Creek Corporate Center in southeast Salem.
The proposal remains in the early stages of review and has not been approved by the city.
"At this point, the city is evaluating the proposal. We're not advocating or approving it right now," said Salem City Manager Krishna Namburi. "The city's role is to ensure that both potential benefits and impacts are carefully evaluated, and any development aligns with our community's long-term interests."
