Dont confuse us with the DC elite. Were building a working-class movement from the ground up.

Yesterday, I came across a guys TikTok page who is running for Congress in Texas. I scrolled through a few of his videos, and he made me so mad. I just scrolled away, but I thought about him again this morning and couldnt remember his name or find his videos again. (🤦🏻♀️Dont you hate it when that happens?)
The reason he pissed me off so much, is hes 100% running on the Texas Democratic Party platform, but hes running as an independent. I mean its like, he read the platform, said, these are good ideas, and then decided to run on those ideas while distancing himself from the party. Were talking universal healthcare, pro-union, climate justice, the whole nine yards. This is the second independent candidate Ive come across in this election cycle who is doing this.
The Texas Democratic Party is the most progressive state party in the United States. However, Im not sure that the general public is aware of this. Moreover, I dont think the general populace knows or understands the difference between a Texas Democrat and a California liberal.
The Texas Democratic Partys platform supports universal healthcare, strong labor rights, climate justice, LGBTQ+ equality, racial equity, reproductive freedom, and deep investments in public education.
The right has spent decades painting every Democrat with the same out-of-touch, San Francisco-brunch-club brush, and honestly, the left hasnt done a great job pushing back. So now weve got candidates parroting the Texas Democratic platform word for word... while pretending theyre too independent to be associated with the very party that wrote it.

(10,738 posts)can't get elected. The Democratic party gains credibility by winning elections and enacting their own agenda. And Texas Democrats haven't been getting it done for a long time now.

(1,028 posts)Obviously it's for bogus reasons, but in my county, Democrats are like the 'heel' wrestler that most of the audience likes to hate on. These voters aren't reading platforms... They just can't bring themselves to vote for a Democrat.
Last cycle, we had objectively better local candidates with better experience, better positions, better community outreach, and we still got crushed by over 70 points, same as every cycle for years. It's strictly about teams here.
So while I understand the frustration, I can see why these independents might think they can do better than Democrats in certain areas. Our brand image here is downright toxic. I'm afraid it'll take a generation or two to die out before we can turn it around.
