Alaska Airlines set to debut Seattle-Tokyo nonstop flight

Alaska Air Group Inc. (NYSE: ALK) will begin a much-anticipated nonstop flight from Seattle to Tokyo on Monday, the first major route in the airline’s plan to build an international hub out of the Pacific Northwest.

The daily service from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to Tokyo-Narita International Airport will be officially launched at an event Monday with Alaska CEO Ben Minicucci and Hawaiian Airlines CEO Ray Lane.

“From our global gateway in Seattle, we can conveniently connect travelers from across our network as they head to Asia and beyond,” Minicucci said in a news release when the route was first announced.

Japan's selection as the first destination for Alaska's "global gateway" doesn't seem accidental. Experts say tourism from the United States to Japan has spiked over the past two years.
