Seattle mayor unveils plan for B&O tax overhaul aimed at protecting city services

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell and City Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck on Wednesday announced a proposal to lower city taxes for the vast majority of Seattle businesses that currently pay the business and occupation tax.

But the plan would raise "needed new progressive revenue to protect funding to essential services and programs threatened by the Trump administration," states the announcement.

The Downtown Seattle Association blasted the proposal as "a tax on downtown Seattle’s revitalization and a self-inflicted wound to the progress we’ve been making to attract more businesses downtown and strengthen the city’s tax base."

If approved by the City Council, the matter will be sent to voters to decide this November.
