A flood of scam texts impersonating WSDOT and DOL are hitting phones. Don't follow the links... delete and report junk!
Criminals who are looking to steal your money have unleashed a new flood of scam text messages that purport to be from a government agency here in the Pacific Northwest, including the nonexistent Department of Motor Vehicles in Washington. (The Evergreen State has a Department of Licensing rather than a DMV.)
NPI staff have collected numerous specimens of these messages over the past few days, as have other local media outlets, and so have DOL and the Washington State Department of Transportation. They are proliferating like weeds despite all the safeguards devised in recent years to crack down on spam and phishing texts.
If you receive one of these texts (many of which dont come from a telephone number, but rather an email address), please do not open any of the links contained within the messages. Do not be fooled by scary-sounding language! Instead, delete the messages and report them as junk. Both iOS and Android make this easy.
Heres an example of a scam message:
Washington Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Final Notice: Enforcement Penalties Begin on June 25.
