City leaders kick off $140 million Memorial Stadium project
Not all of Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell's memories from Seattle Center's Memorial Stadium are positive.
At a groundbreaking Thursday for the $140 million redevelopment of the stadium, Harrell recalled a quadruple-overtime loss from his football playing days at Garfield High, where he starred as a linebacker before playing for the University of Washington. According to Harrell, in that game against Bishop Blanchet roughly 50 years ago, he got beat on an assignment right where the pile of dirt was Thursday for the ceremonial groundbreaking, at about the 5-yard line.
If Harrell is bitter about that memory, he didn't let it outshine his enthusiasm for the upcoming project, which is expected to finish in 2027.

Thursday's groundbreaking marked the official start of a project long in the works. Stadium owner Seattle Public Schools and the city selected One Roof Stadium Partnership to construct and operate the new Memorial Stadium after announcing the group as a potential partner in 2023. SPS will retain ownership and priority use.
