Brazilian transgender federal congresswoman Erika Hilton filed a complaint with the United Nations and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights against the United States government this Tuesday (29).
The country issued a visa identifying the lawmaker as male. She accuses Donald Trump's administration of institutional transphobia and is requesting that the bodies take the "necessary measures" to have the U.S. government correct the document.
The congresswoman calls for the suspension of the regulation signed by Trump that recognizes only male and female genders in the country. Hilton asks the UN to communicate with the U.S. government to take action.
"This official act [issuing the visa with male gender] disrespects her status as a lawmaker performing diplomatic political duties and her identity as a trans woman, in addition to increasing her exposure to transphobic violence," the petition states.
