Corrina Whitney, a Licensed Practical Nurse and NAPE/AFSCME member at the Central Nebraska Veterans Home (CNVH) in Kearney, recently stood up for all union members by filing a grievance after her vacation leave request was unreasonably denied by management.
Corrinas daughter will graduate from high school in May, so in November, more than six months in advance, Corrina requested vacation leave to attend the ceremony and have a celebration to honor her daughters accomplishments.
Management initially took no action on Corrinas request and told her they would re-evaluate her request at a later date. Our contract requires vacation leave requests to be answered within seven days, however, Corrina gave management some time, assuming they would grant her request.
In February, however, management denied the request citing staffing needs. At that point Corrina reached out to her union representative. CNVH union steward Lindsey Eads and NAPE/AFSCME field staff assisted Corrina in filing a grievance to challenge the violation of our contract.
