Helped by Trump, Australian Labor crushes its right wing rival, the Liberal/National coalition, in watershed election
down under
For the second time in the last few days, a left-leaning party in a key democratic ally of the United States has emerged victorious in a critical general national election.
Within hours of Prime Minister Mark Carneys victory in Canada, Australians went to the polls and handed incumbent Labor Prime Minister Anthony Albanese a landslide victory. Australian Labor will remain in government in the worlds great southern land, while the Liberal/National Coalition will be looking for new leadership in the wake of a disastrous performance and the defeat of its own leader Peter Dutton.
With Donald Trump threatening the economic security of billions of people around the world, Australian voters saw in Albanese a steady hand at the tiller who would stand up for democratic values and repudiate white Christian nationalism.
As of press time, with 70.81% of the vote counted:
Labor was projected to have 88 seats, with 76 needed for a majority
The right wing Liberal/National coalition was projected to have 36 seats
Independent (teal) candidates were projected to have 11 seats
Two other seats are anticipated to be held by other nonaffiliated candidates
