National Archives College Park MD facility to remain open to general public

Last edited Wed Jun 25, 2025, 01:17 AM - Edit history (1)

ETA:
This incident is a mess. Someone at the NA posted that the College Park facility would be going to a restricted access operation. At about 8:00 that was what the site said. It is now about 1:00 a.m. The alarming message has been withdrawn.

I guess we’ll know more by the light of day.

WAIT. The skeet needs clarification. This refers to the College Park MD facility and not to the much better known building in downtown DC.

The downtown DC building holds two separate operations in one place. The touristy side has its entrance on Constitution Avenue. If you have research to do, you go in through the Pennsylvania Avenue entrance.

It’s restricted access. You have to sign for an ID card. I used to have one, but it probably expired.

This is fucking grotesque. Those records belong to the public, not to Trump. bsky.app/profile/diki...

Starting July 7, the National Archives will be a "restricted-access federal facility" and no longer open to the general public. It will have access "only for visitors with a legitimate business need," whatever that can be interpreted to mean. #archives #libraries

This skeet has been removed.

Perhaps the Archives’ initial notice left out an important phrase or the skeet did.

This is what the Archives says now:

Restricted-Access Federal Facility, Effective July 7, 2025

Effective July 7, 2025, the National Archives at College Park, MD, will become a restricted-access federal facility with access only for visitors with a legitimate business need. It will no longer be open to the general public. Security officers will enforce these restrictions, and your cooperation is appreciated.

Just went to the #NationalArchives website, and the announcement shared below has been removed.

It seems the question of whether historical research is a "legitimate business need" is moot, at least for now...
